Zega Mame Boy - Troubleshooting

Every pre-soldered Zega Mame Boy is fully tested prior to shipping including: All inputs, Audio (headphone and speaker, Video & Power supply. If you do encounter any issue please DO NOT CHANGE SOFTWARE SETTINGS. If you have already altered any settings or updated Retropie in any way, install a fresh copy of the image before contacting me.

Button / DPAD input not registering

This can happen for a number of reasons.

  • Ensure you are using the correct image. Check the PCB version number and ensure you have downloaded the correct version. Version 2.7 and newer boards cannot use images for version 2.6 and older.
  • Ensure both PCB and rubber pads are cleaned thoroughly. Check this video, sometimes a little more than a rub with isopropyl alcohol is needed.
  • Check the 40 Pin GPIO header solder points for the affected input does not show any signs of damage and is soldered correctly. Check the GPIO pinout for the pins to check.

No audio

  • Ensure both the Speaker and Headphone jack are securely fitted.
  • Ensure the volume wheel is set correctly and turned all the way up.
  • Check the volume wheel soldering for signs of shorts or incomplete soldering.
  • Check the 4 pin connector on the mainboard and Headphone jack PCB for shorts and correct soldering.
  • Check the 2 pin speaker connector for shorts and correct soldering.
  • Check the speaker wire soldering.
  • Check for loose pins on the Mainboard FPC connector.
  • Check for loose pins on the Charging Board FPC connector.
  • Check the mainboard 40 pin header GPIO audio points for any signs of a loose solder joint

White screen

  • Ensure you are using the correct image for your model Raspberry Pi. You can find links to the images provided in the download area of the Mame Boy page.
  • When flashing your SD Card I recommend using Win32DiskImager or Balena Etcher to ensure no settings are changed. Raspberry Pi Imager can change settings which prevent the image from booting correctly.
  • If possible, try a different Raspberry Pi as GPIO pins can be faulty
  • If you soldered the Pi Header yourself double check the soldering for signs of loose or incomplete soldered.
